Protecting the night, promoting sustainable tourism, in Region of Western Greece, 10 June 2026

The Region of Western Greece successfully organised a capacity building event for the general public titled “Night Sky – Light, Health & Nature” in Patras, within the framework of theMedSkyTour project (Interreg Euro-MED).

The event raised awareness about the impacts of light pollution on human health, biodiversity and quality of life, while highlighting the growing potential of astrotourism as a sustainable tourism opportunity for Mediterranean regions.

Mr. Fokion Zaimis, Deputy Regional Governor of Achaia, highlighted the potential of Western Greece—and particularly the Kalavryta area—to develop organised stargazing experiences and strengthen its position as a sustainable tourism destination. Mr. Panagiotis Sakellaropoulos, Deputy Regional Governor for Tourism Development, emphasised the strategic importance of astrotourism and the opportunities created through the MedSkyTour project for positioning Western Greece as a leading destination in the Mediterranean.

 

 

 

The programme featured insightful presentations by:

 

 

 

 

Andreas Papalamprou – “Outdoor Lighting and Light Pollution”, presenting the causes and impacts of light pollution and practical approaches for sustainable lighting.

Michalis Xanthakis – “Dark Sky Parks & Astrotourism”, showcasing how protected night-sky destinations can combine protection of nature, sustainable tourism and local development.

Nantia Bali – “Astronomy and the Night Sky”, introducing participants to the wonders of astronomy and the importance of preserving access to the natural night sky.

 

The MedSkyTour project and its activities were presented by Mary Krimnianioti, including the upcoming International Astrotourism Festival 2027, which will be hosted by the Region of Western Greece and bring together representatives from seven Mediterranean regions to showcase innovative astrotourism services, exchange good practices and present the project’s results.

The event concluded with a stargazing session and light pollution measurements conducted by members of the Patras Astronomical Society “Orion”, offering participants the opportunity to observe Jupiter and Venus through a telescope and experience the night sky first-hand.
