Protecting Teruel’s Night Sky: MedSkyTour Lecture Series in Gúdar-Javalambre

The Provincial Deputation of Teruel (DPT), together with the Comarca de Gúdar-Javalambre, is organising a two-session lecture series titled “Protection of the Night Sky” as part of the MedSkyTour project, co-financed by the Interreg Euro-MED 2021-2027 programme. Both sessions are free and open to the public, and take place at 10:00h at the Comarca’s headquarters in Mora de Rubielos, on 4 and 16 September 2026.

Light pollution and energy efficiency

The first session, “Light pollution and energy efficiency”, was held on 4 September. Physicist Susana Malón Giménez, a light pollution specialist, presented guidelines from the Spanish Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE). The session was aimed at municipal technicians and tourism businesses. Thirteen people attended, representing tourism offices, several Comarca departments, rural accommodation providers and other local stakeholders.

Astrotourism and nocturnal wildlife

The second session, “Astrotourism and protection of nocturnal wildlife”, takes place on 16 September. Astrophotographer Juan Carlos Peguero Baeta, of the CAELUM Cultural Association, will address astrotourism and the effects of night lighting on wildlife.

A resource with economic potential

Antonio Abad, the DPT’s deputy responsible for European Programmes, highlighted the value of Teruel’s skies: “Having better knowledge of Teruel’s skies, of this resource we have, can act as an engine of development, as a lever of development for the province of Teruel.” He also stressed the role of people: “human capital is what will add value to this product we have in Teruel.”

MedSkyTour runs for 33 months, from 2025 to 2027, with partners from Slovenia, Croatia, Portugal, Montenegro, Italy and Greece, positioning the Comarca de Gúdar-Javalambre as a dark-sky reference point in the Mediterranean.
